Artist Statement:
Certain ingredients, like eggs, must be included when baking a cake. If not added the cake becomes dense and
crumbly. It will not rise or gain pillow-like cohesion. Similarly, in a home without tables, or shelves, cabinets,
countertops, or desks even, all your belongings would end up crowding your floors creating a sense of visual
density. If a cake were not baked with flour, it would not rise nor retain its structure. If a home is not built on a
strong foundation, the wood walls will crack and the floors would become uneven. If a cake is not baked with love
there would be no frosting or food coloring, no ice cream on the side, and it would be cut by the flat edge of the
knife. A home without love has no art, no second box of band-aids, no carefully folded blankets on top of the
couch, and the toilet would be a hole in the middle of the living room. It doesn’t matter the flavor or presentation,
but a home must have certain ingredients.
Artist Bio:
I was born in 1999 in Boston, MA, then grew up in New Albany, OH, and currently live in Savannah, GA.
I don’t remember living in Massachusetts because we moved to Ohio when I was three. New Albany was
environmentally a very safe place and I’m grateful for that, but like living in a metaphorically gated community, I
didn’t learn the reasons for these “gates.” My mother is at the top of her field tutoring kids and adults with learning
disabilities and does yoga every morning (at the age of 60) and would laugh at a dick joke. My father is skilled in
running e-commerce and logistics management for retail brands, but really he is a great cook, tends a garden that
fruits every year, and likes watching TV with his hand in his pants. I find the connections between the common
interests of my two sisters and me vs. our parents to be puzzling. Abby, Tessa, and I each find joy in making art
but I was the only child to pursue art in college. School is what brought me to Savannah, and what I learned on a
guided tour is that this city is one of the fucking largest free saunas in the world. Besides that, I’m grateful for the
friends that I’ve met, and my girlfriend Izzy, who I live with. I graduated from SCAD with a BFA in Fine Art
Photography yet I was always more interested in my drawings and paintings so that is what I’m choosing to pursue
currently. I’ve shown work at Sulfur Studios and the SCAD Open Studio Exhibition. My inspirations come from
many abstract painters like Cy Twombly, Wassily Kandinsky, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Mark Rothko; but aside
from artists I’m inspired by, philosophy and observation of nature, relationships, self, and paradox are subjects I
explore.
